Give a Wine of the Month Club Membership
My Wife and I received a wonderful gift from a couple that had stayed at our home for a weekend, some months back. They enrolled us in a Wine of the Month Club. This has been a suprisingly wonderful gift.
The way it works is that the wine of the month club sends out two bottles of wine to our home each month. Each bottle is a different wine, many of which are from small, award winning, wineries around the world. (We also get their newsletter, which discusses the wines sent and other wines.)
My wife is not a wine drinker and we started to wonder what we were going to do with that many bottles on wine. The thought of putting in a wine celler did occur to us... (Actually, we could have adjusted our membership to get the bottles every two or three months, instead of each month.) Then I told her that I was going to incorporate the membership of the wine of the month club with my membership in a flyfishing club.
I went to my next club meeting carrying the two bottles of wine that had arrived by mail from our wine of the month club. The members of the flyfishing club, being people of taste, were more than happy to help me drink the wine. We decided that the wine was such a good idea that we should do it again. That next meeting was scheduled to be at my house, but due to commitments that members had we ended up having to postpone the meeting for a few weeks.
By the time the date of our club meeting finally rolled around the wine of the month club had made two deliveries to our house. This meant I had 4 bottles of wine to share as we tied flies and talked about fishing.
Several of the members of the club were experienced wine tasters and so the discussion somehow moved from flies to the lives of people that were in the wine business. As it turned out a couple of them had actually thought about joining a wine of the month club, but hadn't actually gone through with it yet.
The evening of our meeting was a little chilly so I started a fire in the fireplace and set out appetizers and different wine glasses to sample the four bottles from. This was the longest and loudest fly fishing club meeting any of us could remember. We also had the most fun. We all agreed that the wine of the month club added to our enjoyment of the club, even though not quite so many flies were tied.
The wine of the month club membership is quite reasonable. Several club members have agreed that it's a great idea so we will join as a group so that we will have new wines to sample at all of our meetings.
By joining the wine of the month club we are taking care of part of our refreshments for the hostess of each meeting. We are also enjoying our selves and the great tasting wines. There have been some wines that are sent from the wine of the month club that I personally do not like, but they do not go to waste when it is shared in a group setting.
We have started keeping track of which wines we enjoy the most from the wine of the month club, so that we can purchase them for other occasions. A side benefit is that I no longer feel quite the dunce when the club wine tasters start discussing the subtleties of various kinds of wine.
